Reflections on the first year of AP Research

Encourage students to embrace their personal learning journeys more vigorously and seriously than they have ever embraced a project. Encourage students to follow their passion with a sense of wonder and awe marked not by the sentiment, “This is school work,” but rather, “This is my own work.”

Remind students that they are becoming the expert on the particular articulation of the topic that they are pursuing; no one else has situated the topic in exactly the same fashion before. As such, encourage students to pursue and cultivate their unique inquiry with a dedication and resolve that will reveal a true sense of authentic ownership.

Facilitating successful research is hard work. At the same time, it also likely represents the best possible academic arena for cultivating rich learning experiences and rich student-teacher relationships along the way: AP Research embodies many of the facets that make teaching and learning a transformative interaction.
